A Track

This week A track came back on track. They have been doing a lot of things that they missed while they were off track. Everybody has been reviewing the benchmark test in groups with Mrs. Stavros. In the groups we have been reviewing the problems that we missed. A track has been working with Mrs. Stavros for science while B and C tracks have been working on a science poster in groups. We are now reading Dinosaur Ghosts for reading, we have also done the vocabulary for it. Our spelling words are words from the story. We have had a really fun and exciting week.

This week B track is going of track. C track is coming back on. This weed we have been taking a lot of test. We took a math test, a science test, (B track only) and we have taken a social studies test. We have had a lot of assembly's in this past week, we had the Orchestra Concert, the 3rd Grade Program, and our readers theater assembly for grades 3-6. There were a lot of great stories at the last assembly. The principle has decided to give treats to the grade that is the most quiet and the best behaved during the assembly. 6Th Grade has won twice. The second one was a three way tie though. We really aren't the best behaved students but I guess that we were better than all the other student/ grades. I am going to miss being in school but I hope you all have a good off track and a Merry Christmas.

D track

D track just got back on track and they have already started to learn cool new things.
This week is red Ribbon Week and we are all learning to say NO to drugs.
D track is learning about changing a decimal to a precent, changing a precent to a decimal, changing a precent to a fraction, changing a fraction to a precent, and changing a fraction to a decimal.

This month so far has been so much fun. D track came back on and it is Red Ribbon Week for D.
This week we have had two wounderful substitutes. They are Mrs. Mously, and Mrs. Forman.
In social studies we are learning about Ancient rome. And in science we are learning about heat.
In math A and B are learning integers and D is changing things to precents, decimals, and fractions. We are learning really cool things thanks to Mrs. Stavros. She makes the year better than any other year that we have ever had.

We just finished our Parent Teacher Conferences this week. It is sad. Our precious C trackers went off this week. The good news is that our D trackers are coming on. Here is a list of things that have happened this week.
   * We have finished our Greek Skits. Everyone did a great job. It was a really fun time.

This week we will be having parent teacher conferences. Parents if you have not signed up, please do so. We had a great turn out for the Halloween party. Thanks to all the parents who helped. I think by now we can all agree that Mrs. Stavros is pretty much the Best teacher we've had in all elementary. She is super nice, (well apart from all that "on ya" and "Grrrr" stuff,) :).

Today we made OREO phases. What's that you say? You don't know what OREO phases are? It's when you make the moon phases out of Oreo cookies. The best part about this activity is we get to eat the Oreos after. Look at our neat examples.

This week we have been working on our Egyptian Mummies! It took us 5 days to design our sarcophagus and paint it with our name written in hieroglyphics. Look at the different designs we came up with. We learned that Egyptians mummified their dead. This process of mummification took 70 days to complete. Their organs were removed and placed in canopic jars. Mummy brains were removed using a brain removal hook, which went up the nose to remove the brain. Mummies were buried with their belongings because they needed these things in their afterlife. Wow, we learned a bunch in 3 weeks.

WOW! The first two weeks of school just flew by. We had a cool assembly where we got neat bracelets to remind us to "Pay it forward". This means that we are doing nice things for other people and in return we ask them to "Pay it forward". We played awesome games during P.E. like kick ball, tornado, and steal the chicken. Science is fun. We are learning about the planets, the universe, our solar system, and everything else cool in space. Today we ended the week by having our student council election for track president. Stay tuned to hear about the winners and what they will do for our school.

Today was our first day of school in Mrs. Stavros' Class. We are all excited to be in the sixth grade. We are the oldest, the coolest, and the BEST class. Today we had fun doing photo art. We have been very busy little sixth graders. Today was our annual Valentine's dance. Boy did we have a blast. We not only partner danced, but did line dances, the Virginia Reel, the Waltz, the Chicken dance and ended with the limbo. Upcoming events include a typing test and the Direct Writing Assessment. Both happening in February.

Today we made the moon phases using Oreo cookies. In partners we used toothpicks to shape the cream into the eight moon phases. After we made the moon phases we took a picture of our final product to put into our science folders. At the end we got to EAT THE MOON PHASES...oh I guess I should say cookies.

Today we made a giant cornucopia. Everyone in our class made giant fruits and vegetables. We made green and purple grapes, an orange, a pumpkin, a carrot, corn, and a lot of other yummy things. We had so much fun. Look for the little ants crawling around our cornucopia.

Today we started our Greek skits. We are performing "The Face in the Pool", "The Weaving Contest", "The Great Bear", "Apollo's Tree", "The Golden Touch", "The Kidnapping", and "The Golden Apples". Check back later in the week to see how we did.

Today we made Halloween houses. We had to decorate the outside like a haunted house. Some of our houses looked like brick houses while others looked like wood houses. We put fake spider webs on the outside to make them look even more scary.

Today Mrs. Fay came to our class and did a cool activity with us. We had to design a part of a machine and then we had to match it up with other people's machines in the class to make a whole machine. At the end, she had us fill out a sheet persuading someone why they would want to buy our machine. I think the portable button fan was cool. See our picture.

Today our class went to our first grade buddies and we helped them make Halloween pumpkins. It was fun. They all turned out really cute. We also had to help them stuff the pumpkins and help them staple them shut. That is what we did with our first grade buddies.

Today we learned about the ancient Minoan civilization that was located on the island of Crete. These people lived a very long time ago and their structures are still around. Mrs. Stavros showed us pictures of this Minoan civilization that she took when she visited the island of Crete. She also showed us pictures of Athens and the agora (market place) that is located in Athens. The agora has all kinds of food, such as lamp, fruit and fish. We also saw pictures of chickens hanging up and they still had their heads and their feet!!!

Today we wrote a persuasive essay. Our topic was whether or not we agree with school uniforms. We write an outline first, then a rough draft copy, and finish by typing our final paper. Our essay turns out to be a five paragraph persuasive essay.

Today we designed our gravestones. We made up funny epitaphs to go on our gravestones. Some of the funny epitaphs were..."startled to death by a full moon", "a shark ate her armpit", "kicking kind elephants", "fishing for flounder", and "died from the atmosphere of apples above the attic". We had lots more funny ideas. Look back in the future to see a picture of our finished bulletin board.

Today we played catch ball in P.E. First, you serve the ball over the net like a volleyball. You use a big beach ball instead of a volleyball so it is easier and softer to catch. Once the ball has been served the other team tries to catch the ball and either throw it back over the net or pass it to one of their team members. The goal of the game is to not have the ball touch the floor. We played Miss Oldham's class and the game ended in a tie. It is pretty fun and most of the class enjoys playing the game.

For Red Ribbon Week, today we hung our class flag outside and put red ribbons on the fence. Then we put hand prints up on a school banner to show everyone that we are drug free. After that, we got together and took a picture of our class by our class flag. We had a lot of fun with Red Ribbon Week. So remember to BE DRUG FREE!

Today our class drew pictures for our Red Ribbon Week Flag. We had a contest to see which picture won to be on the flag. We also learned about Pluto in science and how its orbit is oval shaped. It was so WICKED AWESOME!
